An hour later…

Markus stepped out of the pub to take Doyle for his afternoon walk. As he strode past the motor home, he looked at Abby and shook his head.

“Yes, well, tell it to someone who cares,” she said in a sing-song voice. Abby knew she had reached her breaking point and no amount of reasoning could shake her out of it.

The mob had eventually broken up but instead of going their separate ways, they’d all headed inside the pub and Mitch had just taken great pleasure in informing her they were holding an impromptu town meeting to decide her fate.

He grinned. “There was mention of putting clamps on the wheels.”

Abby looked down at the salad he’d brought her. “Did anyone suggest putting me to sleep so I wouldn’t be able to put up a fight when you all ambush me?”

“No, but I think I heard someone mention a tranquillizer gun. Your idea is better. I wish I’d thought of it. Then someone else suggested rowing you to the middle of the lake where you could rock the boat to your heart’s content.”

Joshua stepped out of the pub and loosened his tie.

He looked worn out.

Grabbing her phone, she was about to call him but he beat her to it.

“I saved your neck, Abby Maguire. You owe me.”

Abby yelped. “Surely, that’s an exaggeration.”

“In your dreams. I’m on my way to have a talk with Dr. Pitt. This can’t go on like this. Everyone is demanding answers.”

“Hello.” Abby put her hand up. “I’m the one stuck in quarantine and I’ve been demanding answers to no avail.”

“You should have tried harder.”

She leaned forward and looked toward the door. “So, why isn’t the mob coming out?”

“I won the Christmas ham as a reward for bringing you in but, as a police officer, I couldn’t accept it. So, I donated it back. Now, everyone is waiting for Mitch to draw the winner. Anyway, I’ll talk to you later.”

She turned to Mitch. “I guess you should go back inside before they all come out and drag you in. You don’t want to aggravate them.”

She had a solid half hour of relative peace and quiet, only scratching once during that time.

Then Faith called her from the office.

“Did you finally recover?” Abby asked.

“To quote you, mock me all you want. Haven’t you ever been obsessed with a singer or a movie star?

Abby wanted to say she had no trouble telling the difference between reality and fictional wishful thinking, but she knew that would only hurt and upset Faith.

“My mom will be the first to tell you I’m an odd little creature. I never even had posters on my bedroom wall.” Abby scanned the street. “I’m surprised you’re not attending the impromptu town meeting at the pub.”

“I’m on your side, Abby. But you shouldn’t have taken off the way you did. You nearly gave Mitch a heart attack. He couldn’t talk for a full five minutes.”

“Sorry, but my instinct to follow a story got the better of me.”

“What story? Suspicious Nature?”

“No,” Abby said, her tone puzzled.
